The Florida Forest Service battled multiple wildfires across South Florida on Sunday as flames consumed thousands of acres in Miami-Dade, Palm Beach, and Collier counties. Firefighting crews were deployed to each location as the fires spread, with varying levels of containment achieved by afternoon.

An 800-acre fire broke out in northern Miami-Dade County, where the FFS’s Everglades field unit had contained roughly 30 percent of the blaze by Sunday afternoon. The same unit responded to significantly larger fires affecting the Everglades region, where one fire had charred approximately 9,230 acres while an additional nearby fire burned 286 acres, prompting authorities to temporarily close Shark Valley.

Firefighters also tackled a 350-acre wildfire in southwestern Palm Beach County, bringing that fire to 85 percent containment. In western Collier County, crews with the FFS’s Caloosahatchee field unit contained a smaller seven-acre fire that was 95 percent controlled by day’s end.
