A suspect was killed and two police officers sustained injuries following a chaotic pursuit and armed confrontation in the Hartford area late Friday evening. The incident began when Hartford police officers responded to reports of illegal activity at approximately 11:07 p.m. and encountered a male suspect who fled the scene on foot.

During an attempt to apprehend the fleeing suspect, one officer engaged in a physical struggle with the individual and believed he felt a firearm in the suspect’s waistband. The suspect subsequently gained access to a vehicle and drove away, triggering a multi-jurisdictional pursuit as law enforcement agencies in surrounding communities were alerted.

The chase culminated at Webster Court in Newington, a municipality south of Hartford bordering Rocky Hill, where a gunfight erupted between officers and the suspect. The exchange of fire resulted in fatal injuries to the suspect and gunshot wounds to two officers: Hartford Police Officer Alex Diaz and Rocky Hill Police Officer Jon Escobar.

Both injured officers were transported to a hospital and subsequently discharged. Hartford police confirmed that Officer Diaz was released Saturday and continued his recovery at home. Investigators recovered a firearm at the scene of the confrontation.

The Connecticut Office of Inspector General has assumed investigative responsibility for the officer-involved shooting. Details regarding which officers discharged weapons and the full circumstances of the gunfire exchange remain under active investigation. The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed by authorities.
