Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are preparing to relocate from California back to the United Kingdom in the coming weeks, marking a significant shift after six years in Montecito. The couple has already registered their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5, in British schools ahead of the autumn term, according to reports published Wednesday by the Telegraph and Sun newspapers.
The unexpected announcement has intensified speculation about multiple unresolved issues surrounding the couple’s return, including housing arrangements, security provisions, and the possibility of resuming official royal duties. Most pressing is whether Prince Harry can mend his fractured relationship with his brother Prince William, the heir to the throne, whose bond deteriorated following Harry’s public allegations of mistreatment by palace staff and claims of racism within the royal institution.
Craig Prescott, a constitutional expert at Royal Holloway University of London, cautioned that palace officials must carefully manage the couple’s presence in Britain. “They wouldn’t want Meghan and Harry’s presence in the U.K. here to overshadow the work of the monarchy, and there will have to be some discussion and allowance for that,” Prescott told The Associated Press.
Harry and Meghan are expected to occupy a private residence outside London and will not resume royal roles, according to British media reports. The timing of their return coincides with King Charles III, now 77, continuing cancer treatment for a condition discovered in 2024. Harry previously expressed uncertainty about his father’s remaining time and has indicated a desire for his children to develop a relationship with their grandfather.
Royal historian Ed Owens identified recent developments that have created conditions favorable for the couple’s return, including Harry’s expressed interest in reconciliation and a reported successful meeting between the king, his younger son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren last month at Charles’ Highgrove estate in western England. Owens also noted that Harry has cited concerns about divisions in American society as motivation for raising his children in Britain.
Owens predicted that King Charles, as supreme governor of the Church of England, will likely forgive his son based on Christian principles and ecclesiastical obligation. Prince William’s path to forgiveness may prove more challenging, though Owens suggested that as the future head of the church, William will eventually demonstrate public reconciliation with Harry, even if private resentment persists.
Tension between Harry, Meghan, and the royal family has escalated since the couple departed royal life in 2020 to pursue independent income through Netflix and Spotify contracts. Their subsequent interviews and Harry’s memoir “Spare” intensified conflict, with the couple asserting palace officials showed insensitivity to Meghan’s mental health and alleging that a royal family member made racist remarks during her pregnancy with their eldest child.
Harry’s protracted legal battles with British tabloids have further strained relations. The prince recently faced a substantial financial liability after losing his lawsuit against the publisher of the Daily Mail, with Associated Newspapers seeking reimbursement of 34.5 million pounds, equivalent to $47 million, for legal costs. Additionally, Harry lost a May 2025 court challenge seeking police protection for his family while in the UK.
Prime Minister Andy Burnham characterized security arrangements as a “private matter” for the couple to resolve independently. Despite these obstacles, Owens suggested that media focus may transition from documenting family conflict to chronicling efforts toward reconciliation between father and son, and potentially between the two brothers, as time creates distance from past grievances in an attention-saturated media environment.
