A video documenting Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers using a vehicle to restrain a man against a fence during an Aug. 10 detention operation in Hallandale Beach has sparked significant backlash from immigrant rights organizations across the region. The footage circulated widely among advocacy groups, prompting organized demonstrations at city hall the following Monday.
Activists from organizations including the Guatemalan-Maya Center and 50501 gathered to voice concerns about intensified ICE operations in the area. Rubi Michele, representing 50501, attributed the heightened enforcement activity to the expiration of Temporary Protected Status, noting that federal agents are increasingly targeting communities across South Broward and North Miami attempting to establish stable lives.
The protest brought together advocates including Marie Lisme, Dayna Marie Foster, Nicole Locklin, Lindsay McElroy, and Oliver Larkin. Demonstrators called on the Hallandale Beach Police Department to formally report the incident as potential federal misconduct and to refrain from collaborating with ICE operations in their jurisdiction.
