The Arizona Cardinals’ ambitious rebuild initiative has encountered immediate setbacks as the organization confronts a cascade of injuries affecting its entire contingent of top-tier draft selections just weeks into training camp operations. The team’s first four picks from the April NFL draft have all sustained significant injuries, with two expected to miss the entire season and hampering the club’s competitive depth. The Cardinals selected seven players in the draft, with a majority now dealing with various physical ailments.
Running back Jeremiyah Love, selected third overall in the first round, has been sidelined indefinitely following an ankle injury sustained during team activities. According to sports medicine expert Dr. David Chao, Love suffered a mild high ankle sprain, and while recovery for Week 1 of the regular season remains a possibility, his preseason availability appears highly unlikely. The injury carries inherent risks of re-aggravation should the player return prematurely.
Guard Chase Bisontis, the team’s second-round selection taken 34th overall, will miss the entire 2024 season after sustaining a left knee MCL injury during last Thursday’s preseason matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders. Head coach Mike LaFleur announced that Bisontis would be placed on Injured Reserve, an NFL designation that automatically sidelines players for the full season when applied during the preseason. The guard requires surgical intervention to address the damage.
Quarterback Carson Beck, a third-round pick, suffered rib injuries during the Hall of Fame game two weeks ago despite an impressive debut featuring 15 completions on 19 attempts with one touchdown pass. Beck has not practiced since the injury and missed the Raiders game, leaving his availability for this weekend’s contest against Dallas Cowboys uncertain. LaFleur has declined to specify whether the injury involves a fracture or soft tissue damage, characterizing it only as “soreness.”
Fourth-round selection Kaleb Proctor was placed on preseason Injured Reserve on the opening day of training camp on July 22 after tearing his meniscus during organized team activities in June. Proctor has undergone surgery and is expected to miss the entire season. The Cardinals represent the only NFL franchise managing injuries to more than half their draft class selections.
