Mourners assembled outside Swansea Minster on Monday as the husky-voiced Welsh singer’s rose-adorned coffin entered the church for an invitation-only memorial service. Her iconic 1983 ballad “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “If I Sing You A Love Song” accompanied the procession, with the ceremony broadcast to crowds gathered beyond the sanctuary doors.
Matthew Davis, Tyler’s longtime manager, described her as someone who maintained an unpretentious demeanor despite achieving worldwide fame. “Bonnie was always a star but never a diva,” Davis said during his tribute. “She never forgot her roots or where she came from. She would have been amazed and very gratified at the massive outpouring of love from all over the world that has occurred since her sudden and unexpected passing.”
Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins in Skewen, Wales, died at age 75 last month at a hospital in Portugal following emergency intestinal surgery. She had been receiving treatment in Faro, where she maintained a residence. The timing of her passing proved poignant, occurring just days before her signature song became the anthem for eclipse celebrations across Europe.
Born to a coal miner’s family in public housing with outdoor facilities, Tyler rose from modest beginnings to become a three-time Grammy nominee. She first performed in a late-1960s rugby club competition, singing “Those Were The Days,” and earned only one pound for her second-place finish. Her breakout hit topped charts globally and has accumulated more than 1 billion streams, bolstered by solar eclipses in 2017, 2024, and most recently last week.
Tyler represented Britain at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest, finishing 19th, and received honors as a Member of the Order of the British Empire in 2022 from Queen Elizabeth II for her musical contributions. She gained additional recognition for “Holding Out For a Hero,” featured in the “Footloose” film soundtrack. Crowds lined the streets of her coastal village of Mumbles on Saturday as her flag-draped coffin traveled home.
