President Donald Trump has attributed extensive dead grass damage on the National Mall to vandals, posting images on Truth Social that highlight brown patches near the World War II Memorial where he held a Fourth of July celebration. Trump offered no supporting evidence for the vandalism claim and did not explain the basis for his assertion.

The president’s remarks came after photographs documented large stage structures and seating arrangements occupying the lawn during Independence Day festivities commemorating the nation’s 250th anniversary. Subsequent images showed workers dismantling the event infrastructure, exposing deteriorated grass underneath the temporary installations.

Trump has made similar accusations regarding damage to renovation projects throughout Washington, D.C., frequently without substantiation and occasionally contradicting statements made by his own officials. In a separate incident, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia Jeanine Pirro’s office moved to dismiss a vandalism case after evidence revealed substantial liner damage from flawed installation and rushed completion schedules ahead of Independence Day events.

An arrest was made in connection with vandalism at the World War II Memorial after “Clean hands dirty $” was painted on the structure and fountain bubbles were altered. Melissa Farris faces felony charges in that matter, though charging documents make no reference to the grassy area Trump referenced in his recent posts.
