Warehouse clubs are intensifying their competition for shoppers by rolling out affordable prepared meals that offer families a middle ground between home cooking and restaurant takeout. Sam’s Club has introduced its Member’s Mark Chicken Shawarma Kit, a 37-ounce meal priced just under $16 on the retailer’s website, as part of a strategy to capture cost-conscious consumers.

The kit includes six pitas, fully cooked chicken shawarma, Mediterranean-style bruschetta, feta cheese, creamy garlic sauce, and spicy tahini sauce. According to a Sam’s Club statement, the offering reflects member feedback requesting convenient, high-quality meal options at competitive prices alongside other popular items like the Member’s Mark Seasoned Rotisserie Chicken.

Laura Burkemper, founder and CEO of SCALEBLAZER based in St. Louis, said warehouse clubs are competing on more than just price. “For busy families, the question at 5 p.m. isn’t simply, ‘What’s cheapest?’ It’s ‘What can I put on the table quickly, affordably, and without another decision to make?'” Burkemper told Fox News Digital, noting that a $16 family meal addresses multiple consumer concerns simultaneously.

Bryan Gildenberg, founder and CEO of Confluencer Commerce in New Jersey, suggested the pricing strategy particularly resonates with Sam’s Club’s customer base. He noted that while Costco members tend to be more coastal and affluent, Sam’s Club shoppers are more price-sensitive and contending with elevated food and fuel costs.

Customer reviews on Sam’s Club’s website have been largely positive, with shoppers praising the meal’s convenience and value as an alternative to cooking or ordering expensive takeout. However, some purchasers raised concerns about portion sizes, with several reviewers reporting insufficient chicken and other ingredients to adequately fill all six pitas, though they noted the food was well-seasoned and flavorful.
