Fans of the long-running animated series got their first glimpse of “The New Simpsons Movie” during a panel at Disney’s D23 convention on Friday. Creator Matt Groening and other production staff members presented the teaser alongside updates about the show’s upcoming season, marking the franchise’s return to the big screen nearly two decades after the original film debuted in 2007.
The brief footage centers on Homer Simpson’s attempt to snag a record-setting baseball during a Springfield Isotopes game, though the clip remains in rough animation form. The sequence showcases the slapstick humor the franchise is known for, including a scene of the ballpark organist struggling to play while pursuing the ball and supporting character Jacques Brunswick being knocked into a urinal trough.
The comedic setup represents territory the show’s 800-plus episodes have not previously explored, according to observers. The scene recalls the elaborate, joke-filled sequences that defined the first film, incorporating multiple gags and character interactions reminiscent of classic “Looney Tunes” cartoons.
“The New Simpsons Movie” is scheduled for theatrical release on September 3, 2027. Industry analysts anticipate a significant marketing campaign surrounding the film’s arrival, potentially including franchise tie-ins with major commercial partners.
