A straightforward daily activity may substantially reduce the likelihood of premature death, particularly from cardiovascular causes, without requiring expensive gym memberships or specialized equipment. Researchers at the University of East Anglia and Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital found that individuals who regularly climbed stairs demonstrated a 39% lower risk of dying from heart disease and a 24% lower risk of dying from any cause relative to those who avoided stairs.

The analysis examined data spanning nearly 1,900 studies before focusing on nine rigorous investigations involving more than 480,000 participants aged 35 to 84. Follow-up periods across these studies averaged 14 years and included both healthy individuals and those with existing cardiovascular conditions. Regular stair climbers showed reduced incidence of major cardiovascular events including heart attacks, strokes, and heart failure.

Stair climbing functions as an effective low-impact exercise because it forces the body to work continuously against gravity while engaging multiple muscle groups simultaneously. The activity provides dual benefits: cardiovascular conditioning combined with strength development. Research suggested that ascending approximately six flights of stairs daily may yield optimal health advantages, though scientists indicated additional investigation is necessary to establish precise dosing.

One researcher noted that even modest increases in stair climbing produced measurable health improvements. However, the study’s authors emphasized that their findings demonstrate association rather than causation, and cautioned that stair climbing may prove unsuitable for individuals with mobility limitations or joint disorders. Their results appeared in the American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs.
