Five People Shot at Virginia State University; Police Seek Multiple Suspects

A shooting at Virginia State University in Ettrick, Virginia left five people wounded and triggered an immediate lockdown of the historically Black campus early Saturday morning. Chesterfield County police and campus authorities discovered the victims outside residence halls near the Quad Annexes shortly before 1:30 a.m., responding to reports of gunfire in the area.

All five victims were transported to hospitals for treatment. One individual initially reported with life-threatening injuries was later upgraded to critical condition, while the remaining four sustained non-life-threatening wounds, according to county police. The lockdown remained in effect for approximately seven and a half hours before being lifted around 9 a.m.

University officials characterized the incident as involving multiple suspects and released a statement urging the campus community to avoid the affected area. A substantial law enforcement presence, including agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, remained on campus as investigators worked to identify those responsible.

The timing of the shooting proved particularly troubling, occurring just days before the start of the academic year at the university, which sits approximately 24 miles south of Richmond. Residence halls had opened for students one week prior, with classes scheduled to begin Monday and many first-year students having recently completed orientation programming.

Arthur Fridrich, former director of distance education at Virginia State and a regular campus visitor, called the incident devastating for the university community. He emphasized that beginning the academic year with such violence would weigh heavily on students’ sense of security and belonging on campus.
