Summer McIntosh of Canada dominated the 400-meter individual medley at the Pan Pacific Championships on Thursday evening in Irvine, California, capturing the title in a championship-record 4 minutes, 28.01 seconds. The 19-year-old’s commanding performance marked a successful rebound after finishing second in the 200 freestyle earlier in the four-day meet.
McIntosh led from start to finish and briefly threatened her own world record during the early stages of the four-stroke event. She qualified second-fastest into the eight-swimmer final at the outdoor facility, ultimately delivering a dominant victory ahead of second-place Jenna Forrester of Australia, who touched in 4:31.50.
Agostina Hein, an 18-year-old Argentine swimmer, claimed bronze after entering the final with the preliminaries’ fastest qualifying time. McIntosh had expressed frustration with her 200 freestyle result, where Australia’s Lani Pallister edged her in the opening night competition.
Meg Harris of Australia captured the women’s 100 freestyle in 52.60 seconds from Lane 6, defeating American Gretchen Walsh in 52.78. Walsh nearly reached world-record pace at the turn, falling just 0.01 seconds short of the mark, while Australia’s Olivia Wunsch finished third and American Simon Manuel, the 2016 Olympic champion, placed fourth.
The United States swept the men’s 100 freestyle podium’s top two positions, with Jack Alexy winning in 47.14 seconds and lowering his earlier championship record of 47.40 from preliminaries. Patrick Sammon captured silver in 47.62, while Brazil’s Guilherme Caribe took bronze.
McKenzie Siroky of the United States won the women’s 100 breaststroke in 1:05.32, securing her first international medal by edging China’s Tang Qianting, who finished second in 1:05.46. In the men’s 400 individual medley, Japan’s Tomoyuki Matsushita prevailed in 4:06.75, erasing American Ryan Lochte’s championship record of 4:07.59 established at the 2010 Pan Pacs in the same city.
“Next time I come back to the U.S. I’m going to get gold again,” Matsushita said through a translator following his victory. American Carson Foster placed second in the men’s 400 individual medley.
