Jacob deGrom’s appearance on the mound for the Texas Rangers ended prematurely Thursday night in Anaheim, as the 38-year-old right-hander lasted only two innings against the Los Angeles Angels before exiting with right triceps fatigue. Peyton Gray took over pitching duties to start the third inning, with the Angels already holding a 2-0 lead.

During his abbreviated outing, deGrom surrendered six hits, three strikeouts and one walk across 32 pitches in the second frame. The veteran right-hander navigated out of a bases-loaded situation with one out in the opening inning but yielded two runs and five hits in the subsequent frame, marking his first time allowing five or more hits in a single inning since September 5, 2017, when he pitched for the New York Mets.

The two-time Cy Young Award recipient continues battling injury issues that have plagued his tenure with Texas. DeGrom has been managing a left hip and glute injury since the All-Star break, compounding concerns about his physical condition heading into the latter stages of the season.

DeGrom remains two strikeouts shy of joining an elite group of 94 major league pitchers to reach 2,000 career strikeouts and would become the ninth active pitcher to accomplish the milestone. Through three matchups against Los Angeles this season, he has allowed 10 earned runs across 10 innings of work.
