Ash Gardner, vice-captain of the Australian women’s cricket team, has publicly addressed an extramarital affair involving a teammate that resulted in the dissolution of her marriage to Monica Wright last month. Cricket Australia conducted an internal investigation into the matter after becoming aware of the relationship before it became public knowledge.
The teammate identified in the affair, Georgia Voll, holds no leadership position within the organization, creating potential concerns about power dynamics and conflicts of interest. Despite these considerations, Cricket Australia leadership determined that Gardner would retain her vice-captain role, though the board indicated it would implement additional safeguards to ensure proper oversight of selection decisions and related matters.
Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg defended the decision in a statement, emphasizing Gardner’s standing within the cricket system and the organization’s commitment to establishing appropriate protocols for situations involving personal relationships among staff and players.
Gardner addressed the controversy through an Instagram post, characterizing her separation as a personal matter while acknowledging the need for organizational review given her leadership responsibilities. She expressed gratitude for the board’s continued support and emphasized her commitment to providing effective leadership for her teammates in the upcoming season.
The vice-captain also extended remarks toward her former wife, stating she valued their shared time together and expressing regret for any hardship caused. She requested privacy for all involved parties and indicated she would not discuss the matter further publicly.
