Troy Jackson, the Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate in Maine, has publicly acknowledged involvement in a violent altercation that occurred nearly four decades ago following the emergence of a police report documenting the incident. The confrontation took place in Fort Kent on March 12, 1988, when Jackson was 19 years old, according to records obtained by the Bangor Daily News.
In a statement to Fox News Digital, Jackson accepted responsibility for the 1988 fight while emphasizing his denial of any domestic violence. “Nearly 40 years ago, when I was 19 years old, I got into a fight with another man. I took responsibility for it then, and I take responsibility for it now,” Jackson said. He stressed that he has never been violent toward his longtime partner Lana Pelletier or any other woman.
According to the police report reviewed by the Bangor Daily News, Jackson allegedly kicked in a door at a Fort Kent residence, grabbed a man by the throat, and struck him in the face. The witness statement indicated Jackson warned the man to stay away from Pelletier. The case was resolved through a $50 settlement agreement, and no criminal record resulted from the incident.
The National Republican Senatorial Committee swiftly capitalized on the report, characterizing Jackson as “violent” and “unhinged” in social media posts. The NRSC tagged multiple Senate Democrats, including Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and Senators Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and others, urging them to condemn Jackson’s candidacy.
Jackson is challenging Republican Senator Susan Collins in a race expected to significantly influence Senate control. Pelletier disputed portions of the police account in her own statement, saying she does not recall making statements attributed to her in the report and affirming Jackson’s character as a partner and father. The underlying court file has been destroyed under Maine’s records-retention policies.
