New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani fielded questions Wednesday about his stance on the “Woke 1” era following recent comments by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., who characterized that period as problematic during a television appearance. Mamdani used the opportunity to clarify his current position on policing while acknowledging that political positions can shift over time.
During his Wednesday press conference, Mamdani stated that individuals running for office have a responsibility to articulate their beliefs to constituents, but noted that those convictions can “change,” “develop,” and “grow.” He explicitly rejected calls for police defunding, asserting his commitment to maintaining police forces while pursuing public safety alongside other community partners.
The mayor highlighted crime reduction achievements under his administration, including record lows in homicides and shooting incidents across New York City. He emphasized that public safety and justice need not be opposing priorities, arguing that New Yorkers should not face a forced choice between the two.
However, Mamdani’s current statements stand in contrast to social media posts from June and December 2020 in which he explicitly called for defunding and dismantling the NYPD. His previous rhetoric accused the police department of racism and corruption, demanding budget cuts rather than reform negotiations.
State Republican Party Communications Director David Laska challenged Mamdani’s apparent shift, arguing that progressive figures cannot escape accountability for their past advocacy. Laska characterized Mamdani as maintaining radical positions and accused progressive candidates of concealing their true views once entering electoral politics.
