Some lifelong Democrats are reconsidering their party loyalty and exploring support for Republican Mike Rogers, citing alarm over progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed’s rhetoric regarding Israel and Zionism. El-Sayed’s campaign has drawn scrutiny for its endorsement from Detroit pastor Horace Sheffield III, who previously praised Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan. Campaign records show El-Sayed’s operation paid Sheffield’s nonprofit $75,000 for consulting services, a transaction now facing questions about its appropriateness and timing relative to the endorsement announcement.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, herself a Democrat, has escalated pressure within her party by boycotting the state Democratic convention over security and conduct concerns. Nessel publicly criticized party leadership for failing to adequately address antisemitism and for permitting members facing criminal charges related to antisemitic threats to participate in party activities. She characterized the situation as a fundamental breakdown in civil discourse within Democratic ranks.
Israel’s UN Ambassador Danny Danon has rejected allegations of deliberate starvation in Gaza as a “blood libel,” citing a UN-backed survey indicating child malnutrition rates have returned to pre-war levels.
