The expansion of artificial intelligence infrastructure across the United States depends heavily on construction workers, electricians and factory technicians—not just software engineers. Major technology firms including Alphabet, Microsoft, Meta and Amazon are committing approximately $700 billion this year to build new AI data centers, a figure that excludes additional spending on electrical grid upgrades and semiconductor manufacturing capacity.

The buildout has collided with a persistent problem: insufficient numbers of trained workers to execute these ambitious projects. Industry analysts estimate the nation will require 140,000 additional skilled trades professionals—electricians, HVAC technicians, welders and construction workers among them—by 2030 to support AI infrastructure development alone.

Switzerland’s vocational education system may offer a blueprint for addressing America’s labor crisis. The Alpine nation’s apprenticeship model has generated one of the world’s most dynamic economies by creating structured pathways into technical careers for successive generations of young people. Roughly 70 percent of each Swiss age cohort participates in apprenticeships spanning manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, construction, banking and healthcare.

The Swiss approach differs fundamentally from dead-end job training. Apprentices gain hands-on workplace experience while developing industry-specific classroom skills beginning at age 15, and they may pursue university degrees after completing their programs. For employers, these apprenticeships generate average internal returns of 7 to 10 percent and build long-term talent pipelines as many trainees remain with their sponsoring firms.

Several U.S. states have begun adopting similar models. Colorado’s CareerWise program allows students to alternate between classroom instruction and paid apprenticeships in advanced manufacturing and information technology sectors. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang has predicted “six-figure salaries” for workers building chip and AI factories, a prospect that may attract American youth increasingly interested in vocational careers amid rising college costs.

The next phase of AI development will require physical infrastructure as much as computational power. Wiring data centers, installing electrical systems and constructing facilities will demand thousands of trained workers. Policymakers and companies should consider adopting Swiss-style apprenticeship programs to develop the workforce that transformation requires.
