The incident occurred when Maranhao leaped over a barrier to celebrate what he believed was his first goal at the venue, unaware of a concealed opening on the opposite side. The fall resulted in an ankle injury that initially caused significant pain during play.

Maranhao explained that his celebration was driven by emotion, having scored a rare goal for a defender while his pregnant wife watched from the stands. He acknowledged jumping the barrier to reach both his spouse and the crowd but said the hidden trap door—which he described as a moat—caught him completely off guard. The experience was likened by Maranhao to “falling from a building,” underscoring the shock of the unexpected plunge.

The injury was compounded by the VAR review that followed, which ruled Maranhao’s goal invalid due to an offside violation. Despite the physical pain and disappointment, Maranhao continued playing through the remainder of the first half before being substituted out. Coritiba ultimately secured a 2-1 victory in the match.
