Michigan Meteorologist Advances GOP Primary Bid to Reclaim Third Congressional District from Democrats

Meteorologist and political newcomer Terri DeBoer has secured her Republican primary victory and now aims to reclaim Michigan’s Third Congressional District from Democratic control. The 61-year-old former television weather forecaster, who spent three decades in western Michigan broadcasting, intends to challenge incumbent Representative Hillary Scholten in what both parties view as a competitive race.

DeBoer told Fox News Digital that voter sentiment strongly favors change in a district Republicans controlled for decades before Scholten’s 2022 election victory. She positioned herself as aligned with the district’s values and criticized the Democratic Party for veering away from mainstream priorities that resonate with West Michigan residents. DeBoer characterized the contrast as one between her “common-sense” approach and what she described as Scholten’s divergence from moderate positioning.

The candidate highlighted affordability as the central issue driving her campaign, citing escalating costs for groceries, energy, housing and healthcare. DeBoer’s platform also emphasizes border security, healthcare choice expansion, reliable energy sources and reduced regulatory burdens on small businesses. She attributed economic strain to excessive federal spending and called for eliminating government waste as a path to restoring affordability.

DeBoer drew distinction between Scholten’s campaign messaging and her congressional voting record, specifically citing opposition to transgender sports restrictions and the SAVE America Act. Scholten’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the criticism. The general election matchup shapes up as a significant contest in the competitive House landscape.
