Lauderhill authorities are investigating a shooting that claimed the life of 23-year-old Steve Joseph on Friday. Officers arrested 22-year-old Roderick Thomas shortly after the incident, which occurred in the 1500 block of Northwest 33rd Avenue. Thomas remains housed at the Broward County Main Jail in Fort Lauderdale with no bond set, according to detention records.
Thomas faces charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon stemming from the fatal encounter. Detectives continued their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting through the weekend. The victim was transported to Broward Health Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses Verdis Whitehead and Alsia Shakir reported hearing gunshots and a woman screaming at the scene. Both observed Joseph bleeding following the incident. Whitehead indicated that a female was involved in an altercation immediately preceding the shooting, recalling that she had asked others to leave her residence before they allegedly returned and began arguing.
The Lauderhill Police Department is seeking additional information from the public. Anyone with details about this case or other matters can contact Broward County Crime Stoppers anonymously at 954-493-8477.
