South Florida Nonprofits Launch Major Back-to-School Initiatives to Support Families

Tens of thousands of South Florida families are receiving complimentary school supplies, apparel, meals and other necessities this weekend through coordinated efforts by regional nonprofits. The Style Saves organization, a Miami-based group directed by Rachael Russel Saiger and Isabela Grutman, is conducting its 16th annual back-to-school giveaway Saturday and Sunday at the Miami Beach Convention Center.

More than 20,000 families are projected to attend the event, which features a jungle-themed setting. Participating students can obtain backpacks containing 21-piece supply kits, school uniforms, footwear, socks, belts and hoodies at no charge. The giveaway also features a marketplace supplying prepared meals and groceries, with fresh produce and packaged goods provided by partner organizations.

Style Saves additionally offers personal care and beauty services including hair, nails and skincare treatments. Leadership emphasized that the initiative aims to instill confidence and dignity in students as they enter the academic year. Since its establishment, the organization has assisted more than 250,000 students and families and claims the distinction of operating the nation’s largest back-to-school giveaway.

The Miami Beach Convention Center event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days in Hall D. Saturday’s capacity reached full registration, though organizers indicated limited availability remained for Sunday. Families must register in advance and receive a QR code for admission.

In Broward County, back-to-school preparation extends beyond material assistance to include specialized academic pathways. Miramar High School is expanding its Space Academy program, which immerses students in aerospace, aviation and engineering through practical, real-world learning scenarios. Instructional Director Loli Formoso stated the curriculum directly connects students with industry professionals and exposes them to viable career trajectories.

The Space Academy reflects Broward County Public Schools’ broader commitment to magnet and immersive learning experiences. Superintendent Howard Hepburn confirmed that educators have already returned to prepare classrooms for Monday’s student arrival. “We’re excited to welcome all our students back,” Hepburn said. “Our teachers are already back — they’re preparing classrooms, readying themselves to welcome their students.”

Miramar High student Cole Etter expressed enthusiasm about continuing in the aviation program despite acknowledging incomplete preparation, noting he envisions a future as an aviation mechanic. Classmate Kareen Pierre indicated readiness for the new year and expressed aspirations of becoming an aerospace engineer specializing in systems design. Fellow student Zahara Afflick reported enthusiasm about the approaching academic term.

The district emphasized that specialized programs such as Space Academy furnish students with advanced curriculum alongside internship pathways and additional career advancement opportunities. The Brotherly Love Foundation hosted its inaugural Uniform, Health and Job Fair on Saturday at Reverend Samuel DeBois Park in Fort Lauderdale, distributing complimentary uniforms and supplies while providing employment and resource assistance for parents.

The fair operated from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with no advance registration required. These coordinated initiatives underscore South Florida’s multifaceted approach to school readiness, combining financial relief for families with expanded educational opportunities designed to shape student futures.
