Burns Leads British Open After Last-Minute Decision to Join Field Following Daughter’s Birth

Sam Burns has taken control of the leaderboard at Royal Birkdale, a championship he almost did not enter. The golfer touched down in England merely seven days after the July 3 birth of his daughter Belle, having made a last-minute decision to compete in what could represent a major breakthrough for his career.

Through three rounds, Burns has posted 62 and 65 to establish commanding position heading into the final 18 holes on Sunday. At 10-under par, he maintains a two-stroke cushion over Si Woo Kim and Ryan Fox, both of whom posted strong Saturday scores to remain within striking distance.

Ryan Fox of New Zealand equaled the major championship scoring standard with a 62, jumping from mid-pack into serious contention for his first major title. Kim’s 67 left him as the closest challenger to Burns as the field prepares for Sunday’s decisive round.

Paired with Burns was Bryson DeChambeau, a two-time U.S. Open champion who carried a two-shot penalty stemming from contentious Friday complaints. DeChambeau carded a 69 and trails by four shots, maintaining theoretical chances despite the mounting pressure.

England’s Tommy Fleetwood remained mathematically alive after posting a 69, though sitting five strokes back makes his pathway considerably difficult. Defending champion Scottie Scheffler managed just a 70, finding himself six shots adrift and struggling with his short game.

Burns enters the final round carrying the burden of recent near-misses at major events. He came close to forcing a playoff at Shinnecock Hills recently and held the 54-hole advantage at Oakmont the previous summer before weather intervened.

The Louisiana golfer’s participation at Royal Birkdale seemed unlikely given his family circumstances. While his wife Caroline was expected to give birth during Open week, Burns ultimately committed to competing after Belle’s arrival rather than withdrawing.

Burns acknowledged the improbable nature of his position. “Being here at all was somewhat of a gift,” he stated regarding his unexpected entry. “I genuinely thought withdrawal was inevitable. Tomorrow presents an enormous test, but regardless of what unfolds, I will be satisfied with however things conclude.”
