Bodies of Illinois Couple Recovered in Lake Michigan’s Notorious Death’s Door Strait

The bodies of two Illinois residents in their early 20s were discovered Monday morning near Washington Island in Lake Michigan following a weekend kayaking expedition that ended in tragedy. David Thalman and Francesca Warick, both 20 years old, went missing during an outing in the area and were located off Washington Island, authorities confirmed in a statement from the Door County Sheriff’s Office and Washington Island Police Department.

The pair had embarked on a kayaking trip that required crossing Death’s Door, a treacherous strait separating the Door Peninsula from Washington Island. The waterway has earned its ominous name through centuries of maritime disasters, with hundreds of shipwrecks documented in the channel since the 1800s. Investigators indicated neither victim was wearing a life jacket at the time of the incident.

The Door County Sheriff’s Office transitioned the search into a recovery operation Sunday and assumed operational control of the effort. Authorities have determined the couple likely drowned, though their deaths remain under active investigation as officials work to determine the precise circumstances.

Jane Lee, a Chicago-area real estate broker who employed Thalman, described him as a dedicated and punctual worker whose absence from weekend communications prompted immediate concern. “You don’t see a lot of young people like that anymore,” Lee told FOX 32, noting the office was devastated upon learning of the deaths.

Warick’s family remembered her as a twin whose warmth and optimism touched those around her. According to her obituary, she was “a bright, happy, and free-spirited young woman whose beautiful smile and kind heart left a lasting impression on all who knew her.”
