Enes Kanter Freedom Declares for 2027 WNBA Draft, Challenging League’s Eligibility Standards

Enes Kanter Freedom, the 3rd overall selection in the 2011 NBA Draft, has officially announced his intention to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft as a candidate. The declaration comes amid ongoing debate within women’s professional basketball regarding athlete eligibility and inclusion standards. Freedom, who last played in the NBA in 2022 after being released by the Houston Rockets, made the announcement via social media while wearing an orange WNBA sweatshirt.

In his statement, Freedom asserted that his eligibility meets current WNBA criteria based on the league’s self-identification guidelines and inclusion framework. “Based on the current guidelines, I can and am officially declaring my eligibility for the upcoming WNBA Draft in May 2027,” he said. Freedom added that he and his team have thoroughly reviewed the league’s rules surrounding eligibility and government regulations on inclusion.

The announcement follows recent public statements from WNBA players and coaches expressing support for transgender athletes competing in the league. Golden State Valkyries forward Gabby Williams stated she would welcome a transgender athlete on her team. Freedom’s declaration challenges the league to apply its stated principles consistently across all candidates.

Freedom emphasized that his action aims to ensure equitable application of league rules rather than to demean any community. “I’m simply asking that the current rules be applied equally to everyone,” he stated.
