Throughout his decade in the national political spotlight, President Donald Trump has confronted a relentless succession of violent threats, armed assailants and foiled plots against his life. From his initial campaign through his second term, the president has endured an extraordinary array of security breaches and assassination attempts that remain unparalleled in modern American history.
In 2016, Michael Steven Sandford, a British national, attempted to seize a Las Vegas police officer’s weapon during a Trump campaign rally. Court filings revealed Sandford had traveled specifically to assassinate Trump and spent the previous day practicing at a shooting range with a rented firearm. He received a sentence of 12 months and one day in federal prison after pleading guilty to firearm and disruption charges.
Gregory Lee Leingang commandeered a forklift and drove it into a secured area along Trump’s planned motorcade route near a refinery facility, intending to flip the presidential limousine. The vehicle became immobilized within a gated section before the motorcade arrived, and Leingang abandoned it and fled on foot. He subsequently pleaded guilty to federal charges connected to the security breach.
In 2020, Pascale Ferrier mailed an envelope containing homemade ricin to the White House during the presidential campaign. The hazardous material was intercepted at a mail facility before reaching its intended destination. Ferrier also dispatched ricin-laced letters to eight Texas law enforcement officials and was captured at the U.S.-Canada border carrying a loaded firearm and hundreds of ammunition rounds, ultimately receiving a 262-month prison sentence for violating federal biological weapons statutes.
Thomas Matthew Crooks fired from a rooftop outside the security perimeter of Trump’s Butler, Pennsylvania rally in July 2024, striking the candidate in his right ear. The gunfire killed attendee Corey Comperatore and seriously wounded David Dutch and James Copenhaver. A Secret Service counter-sniper neutralized Crooks seconds after shooting commenced.
Ryan Wesley Routh concealed himself in brush near the fence line of Trump’s golf course while the presidential candidate played, only to be spotted by a Secret Service advance agent who opened fire. Routh fled without discharging his weapon and was arrested on Interstate 95 with a loaded, scoped rifle, body armor plates and tactical equipment. A federal jury convicted him of attempted assassination in September 2025, and he received a sentence of life plus seven years in prison in February 2026.
Cole Tomas Allen entered the Washington Hilton during the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner armed with a shotgun, pistol and knives, according to federal prosecutors. Allen rushed a security checkpoint and fired, striking a Secret Service officer in the chest; the officer’s ballistic vest prevented serious injury. Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President JD Vance and other senior officials were evacuated. Allen has pleaded not guilty to charges including attempted assassination and weapons offenses, with the case still pending.
Most recently, Jeanine John Taele, 38, of Downey, California was arrested Sunday at Trump National Golf Club in Rancho Palos Verdes after authorities say he monitored security activities ahead of the president’s visit. Investigators recovered an illegally modified AR-platform rifle, a .45-caliber pistol, body armor, high-capacity magazines, ammunition and notebooks containing what authorities described as “concerning statements.” A Los Angeles County judge set bail at $250,000 and prohibited Taele from possessing weapons or accessing the golf club pending trial.
The U.S. Secret Service stated it thoroughly investigates any activity that may constitute a protective intelligence concern or indicate potential threats to individuals under its protection. The agency credited the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Joint Terrorism Task Force for their partnership in protective and investigative efforts.
