Tom Smith, a Michigan Republican who halted his campaign and backed a rival candidate, nonetheless secured victory in Tuesday’s GOP primary for the state’s 8th Congressional District. Smith made his political intentions clear Wednesday at a Republican unity gathering in Macomb County, declaring his candidacy and signaling plans to challenge Democratic Rep. Kristen McDonald Rivet in the general election this November.
At the Macomb County event, Smith told party activists he would require their organizational support to defeat Rivet. In remarks to CNN, Smith characterized himself as “humbled and honored” to advance as the Republican nominee and pledged to work with House Speaker Johnson to advance what he described as President Trump’s agenda focused on lowering costs for working families.
Smith’s primary victory came despite endorsing Al Lemmo, another candidate in the race, after suspending his own campaign last month. Lemmo finished third Tuesday, trailing both Smith and Trump-backed candidate Amir Hassan, who placed second by a substantial margin.
Hassan released a video statement Wednesday acknowledging his defeat without offering excuses. The candidate expressed confidence in God’s plan while congratulating his opponents and encouraging supporters that opportunities remained to flip the district in Republican favor before November’s general election.
