Kennedy Center Board Member Rebuffs Senator Whitehouse Over Rejected Meeting Invitations

A Kennedy Center board trustee publicly challenged Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., this week for declining multiple invitations to meet in person while continuing to accuse the institution of mismanagement. Board member Brian Ballard’s Wednesday letter, obtained by Fox News Digital, stated that Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer Matt Floca had extended “several good-faith invitations” that Whitehouse consistently ignored.

Ballard defended the Kennedy Center’s current leadership, saying it has provided the board with “transparent and thorough” assessments of the facility’s decades-old maintenance requirements and deterioration issues. He argued that completing such extensive repairs while maintaining regular public operations would be neither safe nor efficient, and that no responsible board could pursue such an approach at this time.

The board member contested Whitehouse’s specific allegations, noting that the Audit and Finance Committee convenes regularly contrary to the senator’s claims. Ballard also clarified that guided tour suspensions lasted only five days and were tied to administrative reviews of tour routes and scheduled sprinkler system maintenance, not to conceal operational problems as Whitehouse had suggested.

Ballard extended another invitation for direct discussion, expressing frustration that the senator’s written complaints appeared to reach media outlets before reaching their intended recipients. He concluded by hoping Whitehouse would attend the next board meeting, emphasizing shared commitment to the national cultural institution’s success.

Kennedy Center Vice President of Public Relations Roma Daravi issued a statement dismissing political considerations, saying “Political theater has no place at America’s cultural center” and affirming that leadership and the board remain focused on responsible stewardship of the facility.

In a scathing Monday letter to Floca, Whitehouse accused the Kennedy Center of following a “sorry pattern” of mismanagement and alleged the closure announcement was a pretext to hide operational failures. The senator questioned whether the Trump administration’s renaming initiative had prompted the shutdown and threatened potential legal action, including possible board member liability reviews and consideration of court receivership if no credible recovery plan emerges.

The dispute follows a May federal court ruling that blocked the Trump administration’s proposal to close the Kennedy Center for two years of renovations and prevented its renaming to the Trump Kennedy Center, with the judge asserting only Congress holds authority to change the institution’s name.
