Second Lady Usha Vance shared insights into her life as a mother of four in her first interview since giving birth to her youngest child several weeks ago. Speaking with Fox News Digital on Tuesday, August 4, from the Vice President’s Residence, she reflected on the joys and challenges of expanding her family with Vice President JD Vance.
The couple welcomed their son, Alec Neel Vance, on Sunday morning, July 19, announcing the birth on Instagram on July 20. Mrs. Vance expressed enthusiasm about how her three older children have embraced their new brother, actively participating in his care and competing for time holding him during daily routines.
Mrs. Vance emphasized the importance of one-on-one time with each child to ensure they feel individually valued. She described maintaining a routine of daily outings with individual children since returning home from the hospital, including recent visits to bookstores and restaurants tailored to each child’s interests.
The Second Lady acknowledged initial hesitations about adding a fourth child to an already settled family dynamic but said she now feels confident in the decision. She credited the smooth transition to her children’s positive outlook and the complementary nature of their needs with their infant brother’s care requirements.
As part of her role, Vance continues developing her podcast, “Storytime with the Second Lady,” which features children’s authors reading their works aloud. The latest episode showcases author Jackie Oshry discussing her children’s book about summer camp experiences.
Vance identified literacy as a central initiative for her tenure as Second Lady, citing her personal passion for reading and its importance in child development. She launched the White House Summer Reading Challenge, encouraging children in kindergarten through eighth grade to complete 12 books by August’s end for chances to win prizes, including White House visits.
The family is preparing for the upcoming school year by shopping for supplies and organizing belongings throughout August. Vance described these preparations as part of intentional back-to-school traditions designed to ease the transition when classes resume.
President Donald Trump posted congratulations on Truth Social following Alec Neel Vance’s birth, calling the infant “a perfect baby boy for the wonderful Vance family” and sharing a photograph with two of the children.
