Slovenian cycling champion Tadej Pogačar will make his return to Spain’s prestigious three-week Vuelta race this August, his team confirmed Monday, as he pursues an elusive sweep of all three Grand Tours in a single calendar year. The UAE Team Emirates-XRG lineup announcement comes after Pogačar claimed his fifth Tour de France title last month, equaling the record held by cycling legends Eddy Merckx, Miguel Indurain, Jacques Anquetil, and Bernard Hinault.
The 27-year-old has not won the Vuelta since his maiden Grand Tour appearance in 2019, which he called “an amazing experience.” A victory this year would mark only the fourth time a male rider has captured both the Tour de France and Vuelta in the same calendar year, joining the exclusive company of Anquetril, Hinault, and Chris Froome. Pogačar already won the Giro d’Italia decisively in 2024.
The 81st Vuelta begins August 22 with an individual time trial in Monaco, where Pogačar resides, then traverses France and Andorra before entering Spain. The race concludes in Granada on September 13 after covering nearly 3,300 kilometers. Pogačar’s supporting roster includes João Almeida, Jay Vine, Pavel Sivakov, Pablo Torres, Kevin Vermaerke, Domen Novak, and Ivo Oliveira.
