The New Orleans Saints made an unexpected move Sunday by placing former second-round draft pick Ja’Lynn Polk on the reserve/retired list, marking an abrupt end to the wide receiver’s NFL career at just 24 years old. The decision came days after offensive coordinator Kellen Moore disclosed that Polk had been absent from team activities due to personal circumstances, which Moore declined to elaborate on at the time.

Polk’s departure from professional football appeared imminent after he scrubbed his Instagram account and went silent on social media shortly following the announcement. The move represents a dramatic turn for the Washington product, who had helped lead his college team to a national championship appearance less than three years prior.

The receiver’s professional trajectory never materialized as anticipated. During his 2024 rookie campaign with the New England Patriots, Polk recorded 12 receptions for 87 yards and two touchdowns in what proved to be a disappointing inaugural season.

Despite underwhelming results, Polk expressed confidence heading into the 2025 campaign, telling reporters he had moved past his rookie struggles and remained convinced he would achieve greatness in the league. However, a shoulder injury derailed those plans entirely, sidelining him for the entire 2025 season.

The Patriots subsequently traded Polk to New Orleans in a late-round pick exchange while he remained on injured reserve. After spending nearly a year rehabilitating his shoulder injury, Polk never appeared in a regular-season game for the Saints before deciding to retire.

The Saints retain Polk’s contractual rights should he opt to return to football at a future date. As of now, Polk has offered no public explanation for his retirement decision.
