William Shatner Reveals How Dismissed Lump Led to Stage 4 Melanoma Discovery

William Shatner, 95, disclosed this week that a physician’s early misidentification of a suspicious lump nearly prevented detection of advanced malignant melanoma. During an appearance on “CBS Mornings,” the veteran actor described how the initial medical consultation resulted in reassurance rather than action, with the doctor attributing the growth to a salivary gland issue and recommending massage therapy.

Seeking reassurance, Shatner consulted a physician friend who immediately recognized the severity of the situation. That pivotal second opinion prompted urgent intervention from an oncologist who determined the malignancy required immediate surgical removal. Testing revealed the cancer had already metastasized to his brain and possibly his lungs, constituting a stage 4 diagnosis.

Shatner underwent tumor removal surgery followed by two years of immunotherapy treatment. His daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, disclosed during the joint interview that she simultaneously battled her own serious diagnosis, discovering a breast lump approximately one year before her father’s cancer detection.

Despite a prior negative mammogram, Gretsch pursued additional screening based on her instincts. Subsequent evaluation revealed HER2-positive breast cancer that had breached the breast wall and invaded chest lymph nodes. She endured months of chemotherapy, 30 radiation sessions, bilateral mastectomy, and a year of immunotherapy.

Both were declared cancer-free by year-end 2024. Gretsch described calling her father during treatment’s most difficult moments and later breaking the news of her recovery, which moved the actor to tears for only the third time in her memory.
