San Francisco Giants outfielder Harrison Bader will not receive paychecks while sidelined by injuries stemming from a weekend scooter accident. Giants President of Baseball Operations Buster Posey announced the salary suspension Friday as the organization continues looking into how the incident occurred.
The collision happened early Sunday morning when Bader’s scooter struck a San Francisco Fire Department truck, with the vehicle’s wheel rolling over his foot. The accident has complicated his recovery from plantar fasciitis that had already kept him off the field since May 29.
Bader signed a two-year, $20.5 million deal with San Francisco during the offseason and will not play again this season as a result of the injury. Posey stated the team would withhold payments until the outfielder can resume his duties for the club.
The 10-year veteran’s mishap marks his second scooter-related incident. While playing for the Florida Marlins in 2014, Bader crashed a scooter into a parked truck while intoxicated and received a 19-game suspension.
Bader has played for six different teams over his last three seasons, including stints with the Cardinals, Yankees, Reds, Mets, Twins, and Phillies. The Gold Glove-winning center fielder owns a career .244 batting average with 93 home runs and 336 RBIs across his major league tenure.
