Federal immigration authorities moved Friday to block the release of an El Salvadoran teenager accused of fatal violence in Houston. Jefferson Adonay Velasquez-Torres, 18, faces two murder charges stemming from separate shooting incidents and remains in the country unlawfully, according to U.S. Department of Homeland Security officials.
Velasquez-Torres was charged this week with murder in connection with an April 27 shooting outside a Houston nightclub that killed Noah Ramirez, 27. Two additional people sustained injuries in that incident, according to FOX 26 Houston reporting.
The suspect also faces a June murder charge related to an August shooting at a Houston house party where Angel Garcia, 17, was killed. A second defendant, Enrique Aguilar, 19, was arrested in connection with Garcia’s death.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement filed the detainer with Texas authorities requesting notification before any release of the defendant. Velasquez-Torres also faces weapons and robbery charges and is currently held without bond at Harry County Jail.
The teenager entered the United States illegally as a minor in 2014 during former President Barack Obama’s administration. Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security Lauren Bis stated the case exemplified consequences of prior immigration policies and pledged federal cooperation with state officials to maintain public safety.
