A powerful earthquake measuring magnitude 7.1 struck Japan’s Kyushu island on Tuesday, leaving at least 34 people dead and dozens more injured, according to the Kumamoto prefectural government announced Friday. The seismic event triggered an explosion at a shopping center, caused a factory chimney to collapse, and destroyed numerous residential structures across the region.
Authorities have confirmed 34 fatalities directly linked to the disaster, with one additional death still under review to determine if it was earthquake-related. More than 80 individuals sustained injuries in the initial quake and its aftermath, including five people with serious wounds requiring hospitalization.
Rescue teams maintained search and recovery operations throughout the Kumamoto area on Friday, with particular focus on the shopping mall that was severely damaged by the earthquake. Crews continued working through the debris as officials assessed the full scope of the destruction across the affected communities.
