San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. pulled off a sensational defensive play Thursday night, leaping high above the short wall in right-center field at Petco Park to deny San Francisco’s Rafael Devers a three-run home run in the opening inning. The acrobatic grab added another memorable moment to Tatis’s growing catalog of home run-saving catches.
After tracking the fly ball into the gap, Tatis elevated to snag it with his glove well above the wall before losing his balance and tumbling backward. He recovered quickly, flipping the ball to center fielder Jackson Merrill, who relayed it into the infield as his teammates celebrated the impressive defensive gem.
The 26-year-old was repositioned to right field in 2023 following a season-long absence due to injuries and a performance-enhancing drug suspension. His defensive prowess has been recognized league-wide, earning him the Gold Glove and Platinum Glove awards in both 2023 and 2025 after serving as an All-Star shortstop in 2021.
