The Cincinnati Bengals kicked off their training camp Wednesday with an immediate flash point on the practice field. All-Pro receiver Ja’Marr Chase became embroiled in a heated confrontation with cornerbacks DJ Turner and Jalen Davis, during which Chase hurled his helmet, according to reports from WLWT.
The exact circumstances that prompted the skirmish remain unclear, though accounts indicate Chase engaged in verbal exchanges with multiple defensive players. The Athletic reported that a punch was exchanged during the fracas, though the identity of the aggressor was not disclosed.
Cornerback Jalen Davis downplayed the incident afterward, characterizing it as standard competitive intensity. Davis stated he would welcome similar confrontations daily, emphasizing that defensive energy levels must match those on the offensive side of the ball.
Chase, a First-team All-Pro selection for the second consecutive season, has accumulated 6,837 receiving yards, 767 receptions and 54 touchdowns through five NFL seasons. The Bengals struggled last season with a 6-11 record while quarterback Joe Burrow dealt with a significant turf toe injury.
Cincinnati’s defense allowed the third-most points in the league last season and the seventh-most the year prior. Defensive lineman Shemar Stewart sustained a severe leg injury during the same practice and required transportation off the field on a cart.
