Suspect in custody following reports of gunfire at Miami International Airport

Authorities responded to Miami International Airport on Wednesday after receiving reports of possible gunfire. First responders could be seen converging on the airport shortly after 4 p.m. The incident created a bit of a traffic issue for people coming and going from the airport.According to airport officials, departure level doors 12 to 17 and the departure level roadway were closed due to the MDSO activity, with all traffic being diverted to the arrivals level. Video from a Local 10 News viewer appeared to show a man being taken into custody by deputies at the scene. Deputies later confirmed that one person was taken into custody. Deputies identified him as 31-year-old Francisco Ivan Mendiola, who they say is homeless.An arrest form says Mendiola fired four gunshots in the direction of the terminals. Three bullets hit a metal trash can, while the fourth hit the windshield of a parked car.Officials said all passengers and employees of the airport were safe and that there were no reported injuries. Deputies added that there was no ongoing threat to the public. The airport’s departure level roadway fully reopened shortly before 6 p.m., officials said.
