Miami commissioners passed a new $3.7 billion budget and held the millage rate flat during a meeting on Tuesday at City Hall. At 7.36 mills, Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins celebrated it as the lowest in 60 years in her message about the proposed budget. The operational budget includes $22 million more for the Miami Police Department and about $24 million more for Miami Fire Rescue. During the process, Commissioner Christine King, who represents District 5, addressed the possibility that Amendment 3 could reduce property taxes after the Nov. 3 election. Ray Baker, the city’s budget director, said cuts would be inevitable. “It doesn’t hit us until Fiscal Year 27-28, so we will be working as soon as whatever happens in November, if it passes, that’s when we start looking at everything,” Baker told commissioners.
