Candidates for Lauderhill mayor focus on affordability

In November’s Lauderhill mayoral election, voters will choose between the incumbent seeking a full four-year term and her challenger who is promising a new approach.Lauderhill Mayor Denise Grant told Local 10 the city is safer under her leadership.“Crime has gone down in the city as data shows,” she said. “We have ensured that a geobond has been passed, which will help to fortify all of our capital improvements and making sure as well that there’s more police officers on the ground.”Running against Grant is public administrator Pauline Ricketts.“The reason that I’m running for mayor is I wanted to see the next generation of leadership take a stand for the things that we desire in our community,” she said. A hot topic for Lauderhill residents is affordability in a state with a rising cost of living.“I believe that one of the things that we can do is look at how we can revitalize some of the properties that are no longer being used and revitalize that to make affordable housing,” said Ricketts. She also highlighted existing programs that can alleviate the housing struggles.“The Lauderhill Housing Authority, they have a program where they’ve done it before, where they’ve taken old condos and revitalized them and rented them out at affordable housing rates at the different AMIs, 20%, 60%, and 120% AMI,” said Ricketts. Grant emphasized assistance for families on a pathway to homeownership.“We’re working with the county, making sure as well that we have programs in our city that will be able to help families that are first-time buyers,” she said. “We also are helping those individuals that are already in their homes and say for instance they have some challenges to pay their mortgage and their rent.”
