Rain doesn’t stop hundreds from showing up for 10th annual Pink Walk in Kendall

The rain came down, but the walk went on.Survivors, families and supporters showed up at Miami Dade College’s Kendall Campus for the 10th annual Pink Walk on Sunday.The 5K, put on by the Women’s Breast and Heart Initiative, raises money for early detection, health education and support for patients.Among those out at the walk was a couple who knows firsthand why that work matters.“My wife had breast cancer 22 years ago she was diagnosed. Who would have thought husband and wife would be diagnosed with the same disease,” said Willie Ivory, a breast cancer survivor.When Willie’s wife, Andrea, who is the CEO of the Women’s Breast and Heart Initiative, was diagnosed with breast cancer, he went door to door spreading awareness about early detection.But years later, their story took an unexpected turn — Willie was diagnosed with breast cancer too.“Less than 3,000 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and who would have thought I would be in that 1%,” he said.Today, husband and wife are both survivors. And Willie is still spreading that same message, now with a story of his own.Now in its 10th year, the Pink Walk is hoping to raise $100,000 to keep that work going year-round.And despite a rainy start, the people who showed up did so for a mission that, for many, is personal.
