Miami Gardens senior arrested in hit-and-run that left motorcyclist hurt, cops say

A 74-year-old woman was arrested after police say she fled the scene of a crash in Miami Gardens that left a motorcyclist injured and in need of an airlift to a trauma center.Maria Theresa Contreras, of Miami Gardens, was arrested Tuesday by the Miami Gardens Police Department and faces one count of leaving the scene of a crash with no serious injury, according to jail records.Police said the crash happened just before 1 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of West 49th Street and 10th Avenue. Police said Contreras was driving a black Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck west on West 49th Street and was turning left onto West 10th Avenue when she collided with a motorcyclist who traveling east on West 49th Street.They said the motorcyclist was traveling with a “steady green light” when the crash occurred. The victim was ejected from the motorcycle and suffered injuries to his arms and left leg, police said. Hialeah Fire Department Rescue medics responded and designated him a trauma alert. He was alert and responsive at the time of the assessment, according to the arrest report.The report states that medics then transported the victim by ground to Goodlet Park, where he was then airlifted by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue’s Air Rescue team to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center for further treatment. Police said Contreras left the crash scene without providing information or rendering aid to the victim. During the interview with police, Contreras acknowledged that she had been driving the pickup involved in the crash, according to the report. Police said she told investigators that after the collision, she drove just south of the intersection and fled the scene “out of fear.” As of Wednesday, Contreras was no longer listed as an inmate on the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation website after posting a $2,500 bond.
