4 hospitalized, portion of Brickell Bay Drive closed after drill rig collapse

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials confirmed that four people were transported to local hospitals after a “complex rescue operation.”According to MDFR Chief Robert Hevia, the victims included three workers — a 47-year-old man operating the rig and a 27-year-old man and 29-year-old man who became trapped in a container after the rig smashed into it. The fourth victim was a woman who backed up her white BMW just enough as the rig was falling that she wasn’t killed.“The female driver was driving southbound on Brickell Bay Drive, saw the (rig) collapsing right in front of her, was able to pull her car in reverse just slightly enough to be able to get out of the vehicle while the vehicle also caught on fire when the (rig) landed on the car,” Hevia said. “The (rig) landed on the hood of her car,” witness Christina Lardon told Local 10 News.Hevia said all 18 workers at the scene have been accounted for. “I’ve been on the fire department for 28 years,” he said at a press conference after the collapse. “When you see the scene, it’s really impressive — when you see that we had four victims and they were all able to be extricated or self-extricate with minor injuries, it’s a remarkable day for them.”According to first responders, the injured workers were transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center with minor injuries. The woman was taken to HCA Florida Mercy Hospital, also with minor injuries. “Luckily she escaped, she was not harmed, but mentally she was devastated and the flames were shooting up 30 feet in the air,” Lardon said.Drivers are being urged to avoid the area, use alternate routes and expect delays.Drivers should use caution and follow the directions of officers at the scene, police said.Real estate firm Related Companies released the following statement after the collapse: “This morning, a drill rig at 1201 Brickell fell over and damaged three cars and a construction shed, resulting in four people requiring medical attention. We and our construction partners are tremendously grateful to Miami emergency services for their quick response and support. “Our number one priority is the health and safety of our workers and the community.
