1 dead, 1 in custody after crash involving Miami-Dade deputy

One person has died and another was taken into custody Wednesday night after a crash involving a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office deputy and two other vehicles, authorities said.The crash happened around 7:40 p.m. near Northwest 51st Terrace and Northwest 33rd Avenue.According to MDSO, deputies with the agency’s Robbery Intervention Detail (RID) conducted a traffic stop on one of the vehicles shortly before the crash.Deputies said they confirmed during that stop that the driver, Luis Manuel Perez, 21, of Miami, had an outstanding warrant from the U.S. military, but he fled from them.“As additional RID units responded to the area the driver entered a dead-end street,” an MDSO spokesperson told Local 10 News in an email Thursday. “After turning around, the driver ran a stop sign, colliding with a civilian vehicle causing it to flip. The impact caused the vehicles to subsequently collide with an unmarked MDSO vehicle occupied by an RID deputy who was in the area searching for the subject.”A picture obtained by Local 10 shows the flipped vehicle. A person can also be seen on the ground in the area, apparently in handcuffs. “I seen him hit the car, and I seen him flip over in the air. And that’s when I ran over there,” one witness said. “I seen it while it happened. I seen it — pieces of the car flying in the air.” The driver of the civilian vehicle was taken by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue to Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center in critical condition, but later died, authorities confirmed. Deputies said Perez was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital to be evaluated, and the deputy was treated at the scene by Miami-Dade Fire Rescue.While an arrest affidavit for Perez states that he has an active fugitive warrant from the U.S. military, it does not specify the allegations against him. MDSO officials said additional charges are pending against him as well for Wednesday’s crash.The victim’s identity has not yet been released as authorities work to notify the next of kin.
