President Donald Trump connected with astronauts working aboard the International Space Station on Friday during a visit to NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The call came shortly after Trump presented the Congressional Space Medal of Honor to the Artemis II crew and signed an executive order creating the U.S. Space Force Academy.
During the conversation, Trump expressed reservations about spaceflight himself, acknowledging that while some individuals find space exploration compelling, he personally would decline the opportunity. He characterized the orbiting crew as “pioneers” dedicated to advancing human space exploration efforts.
The astronauts told Trump they were actively conducting spacewalks and had additional extravehicular activities scheduled for the following week. Trump invited the crew to visit the White House upon their return to Earth and offered them access to the Oval Office during their visit.
Trump drew parallels between the newly established Space Force Academy and existing military institutions, stating it would operate at the same level as West Point, the Air Force Academy, the Coast Guard Academy, and the Naval Academy at Annapolis.
