Transgender Golfers Dominate Alberta Women’s Championships as Debate Intensifies

A dramatic shift in Alberta’s competitive golf landscape has emerged following the province’s 2025 transgender eligibility ruling, with transgender golfers capturing five individual women’s championships during the summer season. Veronica Ivy and Rachel Elser have secured multiple titles, fundamentally altering the composition of top finishers on provincial leaderboards. Ivy additionally participated on the winning team at the 2026 Canadian Women’s Mid-Amateur Championship.

Ivy’s competitive victories include the B.C. Mid-Amateur and Mid-Master titles won on the same day in June, plus an additional club championship in August. Elser’s accomplishments include the Fort McMurray Club Championship and the 2026 Miskanaw Ladies Open title. The unprecedented success has drawn significant attention from advocacy groups and sports observers.

Responding to criticism, Ivy dismissed concerns about competitive fairness and attacked opponents on social media. “To the bigots: stay mad, and get a better hobby,” Ivy wrote, characterizing critics as “deeply unwell” and “obsessed with harassing a stranger.” She later told OutSports that the competition level involved age-group provincial titles rather than elite competition, arguing media outlets have exaggerated the significance of the victories.

Alberta Golf’s February 2025 policy permits male-to-female transgender athletes to compete in women’s categories if they provide medical documentation showing gender reassignment has occurred for at least one year, with hormone therapy qualifying as sufficient evidence. Women & Girls Alberta, an advocacy organization, has challenged the ruling, citing provincial legislation designed to protect female athletes’ rights and safety.
