Rescue teams navigated treacherous terrain filled with mud and wreckage Friday as they continued searching for hundreds of missing persons in disaster-stricken areas along the Nepal-China border in the Himalayas. Authorities from both nations reported the death toll had surged to 469 in Nepal, up from 390 the previous day, while China maintained its count of three fatalities in Tibet. Combined, the two countries have reported more than 1,500 people unaccounted for.
Officials warned of imminent dangers from an upstream lake that swelled following Wednesday’s catastrophe and was already spilling over its banks. Nepali and Chinese authorities issued urgent directives for residents in vulnerable zones to evacuate to higher ground immediately. Nepal police spokesperson Abi Narayan Kafle told The Associated Press that all rescue personnel, security forces, and civilian volunteers have been ordered to maintain heightened vigilance and relocate to safe zones without delay.
Preliminary scientific investigations suggest a massive glacier fragment detached and temporarily blocked a river before the accumulated water burst downstream with devastating force. The U.S. Geological Survey recorded a magnitude 5.2 glacier collapse event on Wednesday, detected through seismic monitoring stations, long-period seismic waves, and satellite data that tracked debris flowing into populated areas below.
While experts cautioned against immediately attributing the disaster to climate change, they emphasized that rising global temperatures—driven by fossil fuel combustion and human activity—increase the frequency of such events. Scientists noted that the Himalayan region is warming at a considerably accelerated rate compared to other parts of the world, amplifying the risk of glacier instability and related flooding catastrophes.
