High-Speed Chase Ends in Armed Carjacking After Human Smuggling Pursuit in Texas

A high-speed chase on Thursday near Fabens, Texas, culminated in the arrest of two suspected human smugglers after they abandoned their vehicle and one allegedly commandeered a civilian’s car at gunpoint. The pursuit, captured by helicopter video from U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Air and Marine Operations, showed the suspects traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph along Interstate 10 before their vehicle was disabled.

Radio communications indicate that a spike strip may have damaged the vehicle’s front right tire, prompting both occupants to flee on foot across the highway. One suspect was quickly apprehended by a Texas Department of Public Safety officer, while the second individual allegedly carjacked a nearby civilian before being taken into custody by authorities.

CBP Commissioner Rodney Scott commended the coordinated response on social media, noting that Border Patrol, Air and Marine Operations, Homeland Security Investigations, and Texas DPS worked together to apprehend the suspects. The incident occurred near a Speedway gas station at approximately 9:16 a.m., according to local reporting.

The suspects face charges related to human smuggling and evading arrest or detention. Authorities have not disclosed how many individuals were allegedly being transported or their nationalities at the time of the pursuit.
