A second wave of deportees touched down at Cap-Haitian airport Thursday as the United States continued removing Haitian nationals following the termination of Temporary Protected Status. The flight carried roughly 70 individuals, including small children, to the Caribbean nation.
This arrival follows an initial deportation flight last week that brought 160 people to the same airport. That earlier group comprised both TPS holders and individuals who had been involved in legal matters while residing in the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security released video footage on social media Thursday evening depicting passengers shackled aboard an aircraft in rainy conditions, with Haitian music accompaniment. One returnee, a Port-au-Prince native who departed Haiti a decade earlier, expressed mixed emotions about his involuntary return.
Speaking in Haitian Creole, the man noted he had not arrived in the United States through the humanitarian parole program established in January 2023. He described the experience as bittersweet, explaining he would have preferred to return home willingly rather than under deportation circumstances.
When asked about his sentiments regarding repatriation, he stated he had not felt Haitian sunshine in years and lamented that he wanted to come home with a joyful spirit to reconnect with loved ones. The Department of Homeland Security did not respond to inquiries from Local 10 News regarding details about the deportees as of Thursday night.
