State Department Designates Italy-Based Tech Collective as Terrorist Entity, Triggering Website Shutdowns

Multiple websites operated by far-left activist networks have gone offline following the State Department’s designation of Autistici/Inventati, an Italy-based technology provider, as a specially designated global terrorist organization. The agency announced the action against the group, also known as the A/I Collective, citing its alleged provision of digital infrastructure to violent extremist movements across the United States and Europe. Within days of the designation, numerous servers and websites began experiencing outages or becoming entirely inaccessible.

Rose City Counter-Info, a Portland-based platform operated by Rose City Antifa, ranked among the sites that went dark. The State Department alleged the website was used to publish personal identifying information about Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers and coordinate violent activities targeting federal agents. Documents indicate the group distributed materials encouraging supporters to direct laser pointers at Customs and Border Protection helicopters, leading to at least one guilty plea from an individual who aimed a laser at a CBP aircraft during flight operations.

Jane’s Revenge, an abortion-rights militant organization, similarly relied on A/I infrastructure to disseminate messages claiming responsibility for attacks on reproductive health clinics and to promote copycat violence. The State Department attributed the group with the May 2022 firebombing of a crisis pregnancy center in Madison, Wisconsin. The NoBlogs platform, which hosts thousands of websites through A/I services, experienced intermittent unavailability, with some pages returning error messages or timing out.

The A/I Collective denied characterizations of its operations as supporting terrorism, describing itself as a volunteer-run organization providing digital self-defense tools. In a statement posted online, the group asserted that “antifascism and anticapitalism are not terrorism” and stated it would not cease operations. The State Department has not disclosed whether U.S. agencies directly disabled the infrastructure or whether outages resulted from decisions made by A/I, its service providers, or users responding to the designation.

The terrorist designation prohibits Americans and U.S. financial institutions from conducting business with A/I and freezes any assets the collective holds within U.S. jurisdiction. According to the State Department, the group provided encrypted communications, web hosting, secure video platforms and anonymity services to violent left-wing organizations. The agency also noted that media outlets using A/I services disseminated material from Hamas, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, and Hezbollah.
